The Power of HOME: Why Teaching at Home, Matters

Updated: Jun 2, 2024

A girl learning at home, home schooling, learning at home

In recent years, the concept of home education has gained significant traction, as an alternative to traditional schooling. An increasing number of parents are recognizing the numerous benefits that come with teaching their children at home. From personalized learning experiences, to fostering a stronger parent-child bond, home education offers a wealth of advantages that can positively impact a child's academic, emotional, and social development.

Before we look closer, I want to mention that this blog is not just talking about families that homeschool exclusively. This blog aims to shed some light on the benefits of ANY educating that is happening with the family "at home", as opposed to just inside the four walls of our traditional schooling system. There is a LOT to be said about families becoming more a part of their child's learning.

Let's explore why teaching your child at home holds such importance in today's educational landscape.

  • Personalized Learning: One of the primary advantages of home education is the ability to tailor learning experiences to suit your child's unique needs, interests, and learning style (see previous post on this topic). Unlike in a traditional classroom setting where instruction is often standardized, homeschooling allows parents to customize curriculum materials, pacing, and teaching methods. This personalized approach ensures that children receive individualized attention and support, leading to a deeper understanding and mastery of concepts. This is especially important if your child has any learning challenges or developmental delays. Odds are, your child isn't get much (if any) one-on-one support in the under-staffed school system. And even if they are pulled out for help, the rushed timeframe does not leave much room for patience and attentiveness.

  • Flexibility and Freedom: Homeschooling offers unparalleled flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum choices. Parents can design a learning schedule that fits their family's unique lifestyle, allowing for more time to explore subjects of interest, engage in hands-on activities, and take fun educational field trips. This flexibility also extends to curriculum selection, enabling parents to choose materials and resources that align with their child's learning goals and values. With a little bit of preparation and organization, you can easily streamline your home learning. Adding some online classes or tools, can allow for some independence as well!

  • Holistic Development: Home education goes beyond academics, to promote holistic development. Parents have the opportunity to incorporate life skills, character education, and real-world experiences into their child's learning journey. This approach nurtures essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and self-direction, preparing children for success in all aspects of their life now and into the future. This type of education is just NOT POSSIBLE in traditional classrooms. After spending a majority of time managing the classroom behaviours to get through a lesson and do an activity, teachers just do not have the time or ability to sit the class down and talk about anything outside of the curriculum. Learning about breathing, meditation, yoga/fitness, gardening, cooking, money management, etc., is just not something the majority of classrooms are able to accomplish.

  • Safe and Supportive Environment: Teaching your child at home provides a safe and supportive learning environment free from many of the distractions and challenges present in traditional schools. One of the major contributing factors to parents pulling their children out of school, is the feeling that their child just IS NOT SAFE in their schools. Understandably so. Not only that, but children at home can learn at their own pace without the pressure of unnecessary competition with peers. This supportive environment fosters confidence, creativity, and a positive attitude towards learning.

  • Strong Parent-Child Bond: Homeschooling strengthens the bond between parents and their children. Parents play an active (and crucial) role in their child's education, building trust, communication, and mutual respect. Collaborative learning experiences, shared discoveries, and meaningful interactions deepen the parent-child relationship and create lasting memories. This to say, you do not need to exclusively homeschool to achieve this. Evenings and weekends are great opportunities for learning together as a family. Let your child know that they can ask questions, and find answer, with you.

  • Customized Socialization: Contrary to common misconceptions, homeschooling provides ample opportunities for socialization. Parents can organize homeschooling groups, participate in community events and activities, and facilitate social gatherings with peers of various ages. Customized socialization allows children to develop strong interpersonal skills and empathy. Not only that, but children will be better equipped to adapt in diverse settings.

  • Adaptability to Individual Needs: Home education is particularly beneficial for children with special needs or unique learning challenges. As mentioned above, children are not able to receive the necessary one-on-one care that they often require for comprehension. At home, parents can create individualized education plans (IEPs) that address their child's specific strengths and areas of growth. This personalized approach ensures that children receive the support and accommodations they need to thrive academically and socially.

  • Empowerment and Independence: Homeschooling empowers children to take ownership of their learning and develop a sense of independence. They learn valuable skills such as self-motivation, time management, and self-discipline, which are essential for academic success and lifelong learning. This empowerment creates a growth mindset in children, and it prepares them for facing challenges in their life with resilience and determination.

Homeschooling (whether exclusively or on evenings and weekends) exposes your child to a myriad of benefits that contribute to their overall growth, well-being, and academic success. At home, you are better able to provide a personalized, flexible, and supportive learning environment that nurtures your child's unique potential.

Perhaps it isn't in your power right now (in terms of schedule and work/life balance), but homeschooling could be a wonderful option for your family. As the homeschooling movement continues to grow, more families are discovering the transformative power of home education in unlocking children's curiosity, creativity, and love for learning.
